Michael Cooper

Originally trained in the UK as a German and Russian secondary school teacher, Michael Cooper has spent the last 20 years teaching his native language English in adult education in south-west Germany, focusing mainly on business English. He has worked with a wide range of organisations, from aircraft engineering to hotel management, alongside training young adults as multi-lingual management assistants.

 

He has been involved in e-learning for over 10 years, providing online tutoring, marking and exam coaching sessions to a well-known German private university.

 

 

On top of that, Michael Cooper is a qualified translator and works as a proof-reader and editor on a regular basis.

 

 

Authors

The course was first released in March 2013. Ms Sherida Altehenger-Smith and Jolene Tan developed the course material for this first edition. The technical implementation of the content was realized by the Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning (ZML).

 

Dr. Sherida Altehenger-Smith

After completing her BA (German/Political Science) in the USA, Dr. Sherida Altehenger-Smith continued her studies at the Universities of Regensburg and Bielefeld where she received a diploma (Diplom-Soziologie) in sociology and a doctorate in linguistics (sociolinguistics/textlinguistics).
She has been teaching English for Special Purposes (i.e. technical, legal and business), intercultural communication, presentations, and negotiations at tertiary level and in-company for over ten years. She is an active participant in the following professional groups:
IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language), EULETA (European Legal English Teachers’ Association), IATET (International Association of Technical English Trainers) and GAL (Gesellschaft für Angewandte Linguistik e.V.)

 

Jolene Tan

Jolene Tan is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales, holding an LL.M. from Harvard Law School and a B.A. in Law from Trinity Hall, Cambridge University.  In addition to her previous work in finance law and in the non-profit sector, she has extensive experience teaching English-language public speaking and presentations, as well as English as a foreign language, for a broad range of corporate and individual clients.

 

  

 

Revision:  Edition 2015

In 2015, the course was revised by Bruno Boucher. The course structure was modified and some course material such as texts or videos got updated or replaced. The exercises were adapted accordingly.

Bruno Boucher M.A.

Bruno Boucher has extensive experience in teaching English as a foreign language, with a strong emphasis on English for special purposes (i.e. technical, business), meetings, negotiations and presentations. He also is a recognized examiner for TELC, one of the most popular language test centers in Europe. Additionally, he had the opportunity during his 6 years experience as a teacher to specialize in the energy business and created tailor-made English courses for the photovoltaics industry.
His roles at the Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning (ZML) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) include the early conceptualization of the MOOC ‘Power Up: English for the Energy Transition’ and the revision and adaptation of the Online Course ‘Energy English’.

 

Scientific Director

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Leibfried

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Leibfried

Prof. Leibfried is currently Scientific Director of the further education courses “Renewable Energies”, “Energy English” and “Power Transmission and Distribution”.

In 1996, after graduating with a diploma in Electrical Engineering, Thomas Leibfried obtained his PhD degree in Engineering Sciences from the University of Stuttgart. After that, Dr.-Ing. Leibfried worked as a design engineer in the Fundamental Research Division at Siemens AG.  Having completed further training on transformer test facilities, Dr.-Ing. Leibfried obtained the position of Head of Test Facilities for the Siemens transformer plants in Nuremberg and Dresden. From 2001 onwards, he held the position of Technical Director of the Service and Customer Support Division of the Transfomers Business Unit at Siemens.
 
In 2002 he received a call for C4 professorship and was simultaneously appointed Director of the Institute of Electric Energy Systems and High-Voltage Technology at KIT. Moreover, since 2007, Prof. Leibfried has also been Member of the Steering Committee at the KIT Energy Center and Spokesperson for the area "Electrical Energy Distribution and Storage".

In addition to his management duties, Prof. Leibfried is engaged in teaching and publishing activities, with a particular focus on electrical energy systems and power grids.
