What matters now

You are wondering how you can conduct a current or upcoming course partially or completely online. Teaching on the screen is very different from classroom teaching: it is unfamiliar for both teachers and students, important non-verbal communication is reduced or completely eliminated, the handling of technology requires more attention and new skills. On these pages you will find recommendations that will enable you to react efficiently and promptly to current challenges.

These recommendations follow the principles:

  • Patience and prudent use:
During this period of crisis management, significant performance bottlenecks may occur, both in KIT's own and in KIT's external IT and communication infrastructure. We ask everyone for patience and composure in this special situation. In addition, we ask everyone to use caution, since attackers (especially with phishing e-mails or corresponding services, e.g. by feigning information on corona spreading) could use the current crisis for their attacks.

  • Simplicity and clarity:
Recommendations for online implementation are given for selected teaching scenarios. This is intended to avoid unnecessary confusion, especially among students, through uniform implementation. It should be comprehensible for every student where further information is provided for each course. Similarly, it will only be possible to provide teachers with broad support by focusing on a uniform set of tools. The scenarios presented are based on the known present forms. In addition, teachers who already have experience with online teaching can of course add further methods of online teaching on their own responsibility.

  • Recordings instead of live events:
The implementation recommendations are primarily geared towards recorded formats and time-independent retrieval. In order to enable participation even in the event of illness, live shares should also be recorded and made available. In our opinion, "live streaming" at a fixed event date is unlikely to succeed reliably in terms of capacity, at least in the time between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Recordings are typically a video of the presentation slides and the spoken performance of the lecturers. A webcam can also be recorded as an option. In order to make the recordings available within the KIT infrastructure, a possibility in the respective ILIAS course will be provided soon.

  • Scalability and reliability:
The existing systems are not yet designed for the expected intensive use. All recommendations are therefore based on estimates of which systems are more likely to scale and which would not be able to cope with a rush. At the same time, the SCC has already started to expand the existing capacities and, together with the library, to specifically supplement the teaching systems. If there are still performance bottlenecks, we ask for notice and a little patience. With the proposed scenarios, the KIT technology can bundle the existing resources in a more targeted manner in order to maintain operation. Reliability also includes legal aspects, such as data protection. In the scenarios presented, KIT's own systems have priority as far as possible and are specifically supplemented in a balancing of goods.

  • Mobile First:
On the student side, we assume that at least one mobile device is available.
