Research data management for students

Research data management (RDM) plays a central role in today's scientific landscape and is crucial for the responsible handling of data generated during various research projects. It is not just about storing data, but also about its availability, traceability and long-term preservation. By introducing modern practices in research data management, we want to ensure that students at KIT are best prepared for the demands of their academic and professional careers.

The DORA4KIT project has initiated the development of a learning platform (KIT internal) and has already provided the first courses on RDM. The aim is to make all students equally aware of the importance of data management and to firmly anchor the responsible handling of research data in education and research. The offerings are to be continuously expanded - so it's worth checking back regularly.

Why should students get involved with RDM?

  1. Relevance for research: The ability to organize, store and maintain data effectively plays a crucial role in conducting high-quality scientific studies. Therefore, a good understanding of data management is crucial to optimize research processes, ensure the reliability of results and make the entire scientific workflow efficient.

  2. Career benefits: In many scientific disciplines, data skills are increasingly becoming a key attribute for successful careers. Employers in academia and industry are looking for graduates who not only have specialist knowledge, but also the ability to handle and analyze research data efficiently.

  3. Ethics and responsibility: The responsible handling of research data helps to maintain scientific integrity. Students learn to consider ethical principles when handling data and thus contribute to the prevention of misconduct and scientific malpractice.

  4. Lifelong learning: The vision of DORA4KIT extends to the continuous integration of RDM practices into everyday academic life. This concept of lifelong learning not only provides the opportunity to constantly update expertise, but also strengthens adaptability to new challenges in the ever-evolving research landscape.

Overall, exposure to research data management not only provides students with a clear knowledge advantage, but also strengthens their skills in teamwork, problem solving and decision making - all crucial skills for a successful future career in academia.
