New in ILIAS

ILIAS is updated in regular intervals. Here you will find the most important new features of each version. Currently KIT-ILIAS runs on version 5.4.5.

ILIAS 5.4.5

Our KIT-ILIAS runs with the new version 5.4.5 the since winter semester 19/20.
This new version brings some changes. The most interesting ones shall be described here shortly.

More modern: New Content Style

What probably catches the eye first is that ILIAS 5.4 offers a chic and modern look in the page editor. Contents of category, course and group pages as well as learning modules, wikis and blogs in ILIAS are visually enhanced. Known elements have been redesigned, some new elements have been added.

New view: Tiles instead of list

Courses, groups, categories and folders can be displayed in tile layout. The tiles are initially given a default color. After that, images can be uploaded individually for many object types. The titles and descriptions and actions are displayed on the tiles.

Multilingual: Start pages

Until now only categories could display multilingual content. Now the start pages of all container types, including start pages of courses, groups and folders, offer the possibility to display content depending on the user language

New exercise type: submit wikis as exercises

The exercise now offers the possibility for teams to create, edit and submit wikis together. You can prepare a Wiki which will then be copied automatically by the exercise. This allows you to preconfigure certain page templates, topics or navigation elements.

With reminder: Remember exercise units

It will be easier for tutors and participants to keep track of their exercise unit appointments. Reminder e-mails are sent, which remind them of the upcoming task. The appointments are still entered in the calendar as usual.

More interactive: Timeline in courses and groups

The news timeline becomes much more vivid with ILIAS 5.4. Pictures and videos can be posted. Members can add comments to news or post reactions like likes and smilies. A daily mail informs about all events in the timeline if desired.

New survey type: self-evaluation

The survey has a new type 'self-evaluation'. Self-evaluation presents participants with questions to evaluate their own behaviour as a cause for reflection. It is no longer necessary to use a 360° feedback survey for pure self-evaluation.

The KIT learning platform has been running under ILIAS version 5.3.8 since 12.09.2018
This new version brings some changes. The most interesting ones will be described here in brief.

Responsive column layout:

You can distribute your page contents over several columns in the page editor. The option "Column layout" is now available for this. This way you can have your course contents displayed attractively for all screen sizes, no matter if widescreen or smartphone. No extra effort for responsiveness is now required.

The calendar has a more attractive design and has also been optimised for mobile phones. Users can download files assigned to objects directly from the appointment.

file preview:

For well-known file formats ILIAS now offers a direct preview of the content. A small screen icon next to the file name allows you to view the content of a pdf file or a jpg image, for example. This allows a user to selectively choose which file he wants to download, for example.

Making interaction visible: Timeline as a mirror of the events in the course

New events, news and content in a course can now be displayed together on a timeline. For this purpose you can activate a so-called timeline with its own tab. To do so activate the messages in the course settings and define there that the tab Timeline is to be displayed in addition to the tab Content. All activities are automatically added to the timeline and thus visualized.

Improved navigation in tests

Participants are shown the answer status for each question. They can navigate freely in the test, view and answer questions in any order. ILIAS collects correct statistics in the background about which questions were actually processed and which ones were only viewed. When participants navigate to the next question in a test for the first time they have to either save or discard their answer. They are reminded of this in a small info window. To speed up navigation, they can activate automatic saving for all further questions with a single mouse click. From now on you simply navigate with "Next" and ILIAS will save your answers automatically.

ILIAS 5.1.5

At the beginning of the winter term 16/17 ILIAS will go into productive operation with the updated version 5.1.5. Besides a comprehensive new make-up ILIAS version 5.1 will bring some new features and improvements. The most important new features and improvements are:

New objects and page elements

You can now use the new object Study programme you can combine courses into study programs. Their structure can be branched, weighted and adapted for individual groups.

The object bibliography list offers the possibility to add existing bibliography lists like .bib, .bibtex or .ris files to a course room. The lists cannot be edited directly within ILIAS. However, the lists can be overwritten with externally updated files.

The so-called carousel has been added as a new page element. The carousel is an additional variant of the accordion and offers the possibility to fade in materials from right to left in recurring order.

Improvements in course administration

In future, objects can be copied to several destinations, ILIAS-wide, in a single step. Materials can now be distributed to several course rooms at the same time instead of only one at a time.

ILIAS now offers the possibility to centrally manage and assign content modules such as texts.

Up to now page content such as texts, images and objects could be grouped in so-called blocks and by activating/deactivating the block these could be made visible or hidden as required. However, this had to be done manually. The new version now allows to set the period of visibility of a block. Thus, contents or information can be presented at the exact time.

Automatic moving up of participants

Students on a waiting list will move up automatically in the future and will be given a place in the course room as soon as a place becomes available. The lucky student will be informed immediately by the system.

Collaborative work

Project teams can now be set up easily. The joint project work is recorded as submitted for all members of a team when it is handed in. Feedback and grades can be formulated and assigned for the entire team in a single step.

Semesterly booking options

Appointments, e.g. for consultations or project meetings, can now be created and booked for each semester via ILIAS. The necessary schedules can now be precisely defined with start and end dates. Booking outside a given time frame is now a thing of the past.
