Guidance, Resources, and Tips for the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we study: It can assist with learning, research, writing, and programming. At the same time, it’s important to use it thoughtfully—because AI does not replace independent thinking or academic work.
Before you can use AI resources such as the AI Toolbox or Microsoft Copilot at KIT, you must complete the AI Competency Module. This learning module covers the basics of generative AI, how it works, its limitations, and practical examples of its use. Upon successful completion, you’ll gain access to KIT’s AI resources.

Content
: The AI can explain technical terms and concepts at varying levels of depth. It offers alternative phrasing—for example, simpler or more detailed—and provides examples as well as step-by-step explanations.
Editing
code and technical content
The AI explains programming concepts and examples. It comments on and discusses code snippets and assists with debugging as well as reflecting on different approaches to solving problems.
Summarizing and Organizing
: The AI can summarize texts, scripts, or your own notes. It develops suggested outlines for topics, presentations, or papers and formats content in various ways, such as bullet points or summaries.
Analyzing and Revising
Texts
The AI provides feedback on the clarity, style, and structure of texts you’ve written yourself. It suggests alternative phrasing and clarifications and helps you identify ambiguities or contradictions.
Generating
Questions and Exercises
The AI can create comprehension and exercise questions on specified topics. It generates variations of exercises with varying levels of difficulty and discusses or comments on its own approaches to solving them.
Research and Information Gathering
The AI assists with literature searches and categorizes sources. It helps develop search terms and can summarize complex texts to make it easier to grasp the main points.

When you upload documents, make sure you have permission to do so. Uploading copyrighted material (e.g., lecture notes) can be problematic—if in doubt, ask for permission or use only your own materials.
AI responses may contain errors (so-called "hallucinations"), be factually incorrect, or cite sources that do not exist. AI is not a substitute for academic literature, lectures, or courses. Always verify answers using your lecture notes or the relevant literature.
For examinations and academic papers, the guidelines for AI use established by your degree program apply. AI may not be used to circumvent examination requirements—for example, by having AI write written assignments or solutions to graded assignments. If you’re unsure, ask your instructors.
