The Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning (ZML) in profile

Our core competence lies in the conceptual design, development, implementation and evaluation of distance-learning and blended-learning programs in higher and continuing education. In these areas of technology-enhanced teaching and learning we have provided specially tailored courses to our participants over the past 20 years and are offering our practical expertise to project partners.

To our partners and customers, we offer efficient communication and cooperation. We strive to enrich our expertise above all through various model projects aimed at investigating the use of new media in different teaching and learning contexts. The Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning acts as a reliable partner and supports a results-oriented and multimodal approach.

ZML is a scientific institution operating within the framework of the House of Competence (HoC), the central institution of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) for conveying key competences.

Our target groups

As an education provider, we address teachers and learners across a wide range of educational contexts, such as school, university, working life, or other life situations. We develop digitally enhanced teaching and learning solutions that are available anytime and anywhere. Thus, we promote lifelong learning as an integral part of everyday life - at an academic level and in close contact with the latest research.

As a coordinating center for e-learning at KIT, ZML continually keeps track of new developments. We test and evaluate the application of digital formats in education and, based on the results of our studies, we develop didactically sound, media-supported educational offerings. Together with other KIT institutes we support the development and integration of digital media in teaching at KIT, thus promoting innovative approaches in the context of research-based learning.

What is the key to our success?

To us, successful learning means that through our programs, participants are enabled to act in a more professional and methodically competent manner and to develop and implement sustainable strategies for approaching learning tasks. We do not consider the application of digital media as an end in itself, but invariably in connection with the added value created through their use. With our offers we also aim to promote individual media competence as one of the key competencies of the 21st century.

As an academic institution, we use application-oriented empirical methods whose results are directly relevant to practice and suitable for implementation. We analyze the possible applications of the new media in a wide range of teaching and learning scenarios and implement goal-oriented approaches in this area. Furthermore, we evaluate existing teaching and learning concepts to ensure their continuous development and improvement at the practical and theoretical level.

The quality of the work of the Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning derives from the competencies and the high commitment of all its employees. ZML sees itself as a learning organization striving to promote the individual potential of its employees and to continually foster their professional and personal development.
